What’s the difference between Transfer and Sync when moving to a new device?
When using the Authenticator App, it’s important to understand the difference between Transfer and Sync & Backup. Both can help you move your 2FA codes to a new device, but they work differently and have different purposes.
🔄 Transfer (Local Device-to-Device Transfer)
Transfer happens when your data is moved directly from one device to another, such as during Apple’s device-to-device setup or when restoring a full device backup. This method copies your Authenticator App local data to your new device.
However, transfer does not create an iCloud backup. If the Authenticator App is ever deleted after a transfer, the locally transferred data is deleted with it. When reinstalling the app later, the vault will not appear if it was never backed up to iCloud through the Sync & Backup feature.
Transfer is helpful when moving to a new device, but it does not protect your data long-term.
☁️ Sync & Backup (iCloud Encrypted Backup)
Sync & Backup securely saves your 2FA codes in your iCloud using end-to-end encryption. When this feature is turned on, your vault can be restored at any time, even if:
You delete or reinstall the Authenticator App
You lose or replace your device
You want to access your codes on multiple Apple devices
📌 In short
Transfer moves your accounts once, directly between devices, but offers no long-term backup.
Sync & Backup keeps your accounts safely stored in iCloud so they can be restored anytime.
ℹ️ If you plan to use Transfer, please make sure you know your vault password. You’ll need it to access your vault on the new device. If needed, you can reset the password on your current device through Settings → Security, as long as the app can be unlocked with Face ID or Touch ID.
🔐 Note on security: For your protection, the app asks for your password first, even if you usually use Face ID or Touch ID. This helps confirm you’re the rightful owner of your data.
